Fighting Superbugs: Antimicrobial Resistance in Philippine Communities

Imagine a world where common infections become deadly because simple microbes have mutated to become superbugs and antibiotics no longer work against them. This is the alarming threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which according to the World Health Organization (WHO), could cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050, if left unaddressed.

The primary driver of AMR is the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. When antibiotics are used unnecessarily or incorrectly, microbes like bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites adapt and evolve. They become resistant against drugs designed to kill them. Previously treatable common infections can become life-threatening.

Addressing this issue is crucial to protect our health and future generations.1

AMR in the Philippines

In our country, antibiotic misuse in the community is rampant.  You might have witnessed the widespread practice of taking antibiotics without consulting a doctor, perhaps for a common cold or flu, which are usually viral and not treatable by antibiotics. This is a significant contributor to the rise of resistant bacteria in our communities and even in your home.

Combating AMR in the Philippines is particularly challenging due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, lack of regulation on antibiotic sales, and insufficient public awareness about AMR.

How You Can Help

As a responsible member of the community, you have a crucial role to play in combating AMR. Here are a few steps you can take:

Consult a Doctor
Always seek professional medical advice before taking antibiotics. Do not self-medicate.

Follow Prescriptions
If prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Do not skip doses or stop taking them earlier than prescribed, even if you feel better.

Spread Awareness
Educate your family and friends about the dangers of antibiotic misuse and the importance of responsible use.

Support Regulations
Advocate for stricter regulations on the sale of antibiotics in the Philippines to prevent over-the-counter purchases without prescriptions.

Health literacy in the community is a powerful tool in the fight against AMR. Knowing when and how to use antibiotics correctly can greatly help reduce its misuse. Furthermore, health literacy changes health related behaviors. When you are well-informed, you are less likely to demand antibiotics for viral infections or stop taking them prematurely.
